The Marathon Trainers

Elias Maindi, 30, from Iten, the Kenyan capital of running, started running when he was a child: “It was the only way to go and come back from school in time every day. The school was 3 km away and I had to go and come back morning and afternoon”. His role model is Martin Lel, who also became his mentor and has him train in his camp. He has been running professionally since 2002, and internationally since 2008, first focusing on short distances (5,10,15 Km) then in 2007 moving to full marathons. His best times are 2h 08m 23s full marathon (Great Lakes Marathon, Kisumu, 2007); 61 min half marathon (Venlo, NL, 2007), 28 min 50 sec for the 10K (Utrecht 2008). He has been chosen as pacemaker in several high profile competitions: London, Bonn, Frankfurt, Rotterdam, Xian Men, Pepu. His goal for 2011 is to run a marathon in 2h 06min.

Elias will be assisted by Johana Kariankei, 17, from Kipangas (Narok). He started training professionally in 2008 and has been doing it full time since he finished school in Jan 2010. He currently trains with Elias. His specialty for now is the 3000 mt steeple chase where he can combine his running skills with his Maasai passion for jumps. He started running half marathons in 2009.
